Mozaik Vitra Objects of Desire Surrealism and Design 1924 – Today

by 1290SQM

Surrealism was one of the most influential art movements of the twentieth century. This book explores the dialog between Surrealism and design and reveals for the first time the enormous influence the movement has had on design over the last hundred years.

It encouraged designers to question the reality beyond the visible and to design objects that offer resistance, undermine routine and disrupt the everyday. The range of examples ranges from Duchamp’s readymades to Dalí’s sensual object sculptures, works by designers such as Carlo Mollino or Gae Aulenti, and includes contemporary designs that analyze new technologies or gender roles in subversive ways. Clearly, Surrealism has lost none of its relevance in terms of both art and design.
